disappointed,
I was so excited to get this pie maker. But when I started using it, the excitement turned quickly into disappointment. First of all, it was sad to learn that the fillings had to be cooked before you put them into your crust. The pie maker will not cook the pie, like in a regular oven. Only cooked ingredients can be added. For example, if you want to make apple pie, you have to cook the apples on the stove top, then fill the pie crust. Secondly, the top of the pies do not quite reach the top heating area of the machine, so the bottom of the pie cooks a lot quicker than the top. You will either have brown bottom crust, and partly raw top crust, or you practically have to burn the bottom by the time the top is cooked. Now I really wish I would have just bought some little pie pans and used my Breville smart toaster oven to make little pies. By the way the Breville toaster over with the convection feature is a dream!! I am using it for all my baking now. Please do not waste your money on the pie maker.

|Sweet mini pies and fun to do as well,
I got this sweet little pie maker and it works well..
This is a simple concept and perfect for portion control. I have found that NOT preheating works better for me..
you need to use at least 1/4 cup of filling for the top to touch but no over flow.. and then all is well.
I also used the crescent rolls in a can and they work very well to make a crispy top.. I mixed both fresh berries and canned to pie filling to give it a more home taste( blueberry pie filling) and that worked extremely well.Even put some fresh cranberries in with canned cherry pie filling very good.
Also made mini swiss cheese and bacon quiches and greek spinach pies.. worked like a charm.
When I was running short of time.. I used a can of beef stew and made POT PIES…. and then leaned to save some of my own Beef Stew in teh freezer for future POT PIES !!!!
To be a little calorie friendly we also tried the low cal raisin bread as the crust and that was a huge success.
What I have been not as happy with is the cupcakes.. I think it is hard to get the right amt as the cupcake tended to over spring and were very light and airy.. we like a more dense cake type
But try the Pecan Pies and Pumpkin pie.. soooooo NICE…
Clean up is NOTHING.. let it cool and wipe it down..
But the nicest thing about this is to end a meal with HOT PIE.. I put i on just as we are sitting down.. and by the time I make the coffee the pies are DONE. Any everyone gets the ONE they want so we are ALL HAPPY w our MINI PIE MAKER…..

|A Great Little Pie Maker,
First of all, the styling of this pie maker is very hip and reminds me of a 1950′s Chevy since it has aqua diecast metal on the top (which does get kind of hot while cooking, FYI). It’s bigger than I thought it would be, but it makes pretty good-sized mini pies.
One thing that bothered me about using this cooker was that you had to preheat it and then put the bottom pie crust in — this is tricky because pressing the pie dough down can make for wrinkled pie crusts if you’re not very careful when pressing down. I put the circle of pie dough (which was easy to cut out with the cutter that’s provided with the maker) on the top of the well for a second and then lightly push the dough down to prevent too much wrinkling.
Although that bothered me, I still was able to make crowd-pleasing pumpkin pies (without tops, obviously). I did take some scraps and made letters, hearts, and random things that my sister tried to analyze that I put on the tops to make them individualized. One can of pre-made pumpkin pie filling (with the added 2 eggs and egg nog substituted for evaporated milk) makes about 20 pie fillings, depending on how much you put in there. They seemed to do the best with cooking 10 minutes or slightly more, not the 5-8 minutes the pie maker believes will cook all pies. Still, that’s not very long for delicious baby pies.
I’m hoping to bring these baby pies to events and possibly cutting them up into slices. Overall, I’m pleased with the pie maker from Nostaglia Electrics and am looking forward to making berry pies with tops next.

|Great pans, but wouldn’t use the cutters,
I love this pan! It makes super little pies and the non-stick surface is wonderful and unbelievably easy to clean. The removable bottoms allow you to easily pop out the pies with no damage to the crust. And, they’re very “green” – no throw-away little aluminum pie pans.
Don’t count on the included recipes. There are only 3, and they’re printed on the INSIDE of the box. This is the reason I’m not giving the pan a 5-star rating. If you’re like me and want to keep the pan in the box, you’ll have a difficult time reading the recipes.
I’ve had success using my regular pie recipes, just adjusting the cooking times. It takes a bit of experimentation to get the cooking times right, but once you do, the pies come out great.
I found the included cutter to be too small for a one-crust pie. I got better results using a 6 inch round cutter. FYI – I’m getting 4 2-crust pies, or 8 1-crust pies out of my regular 2-crust pie crust recipe. Each mini-pie holds a *generous* 1/2 cup filling. For example, my regular pumpkin pie recipe yields 4 1/2 cups of filling, and I got 8 mini-pies from the recipe.
I have MANY other Chicago Metallic pans, and highly recommend their removable bottom cake pans.

|Great for Pot Pies,
I ordered this in order to make and freeze pot pies for my husband and I.
I made, seafood, chicken, and beef pot pies, froze them in the pan, and then
took them out and wrapped them individually and vacuum sealed them. Now I have
supper whenever I don’t want to think about it.
I also froze peach and apple pies.
Just why I ordered it.

|love the mini pies!,
I recieved this mini pie maker as a gift from my children. They did not purchase it at Amazon, instead it was purchased at william and sonoma. It costs up to three times as much at william and sonoma. Let me just say – this is a great little machine. Especially if you enjoy pie and want to eat a small amount of it. It works well with store bought refrigerated dough but you can easily make your own. It takes about ten minutes (after you prepare the filling) to make four mini shepard pies. Really, you can’t beat it! Its about the size of a pannini maker so it does not take up much space. It comes with a dough cutter and a fitter for the dough as well as several great ideas for pie to get you started. Now the whole family can get exactly the type of pie they want without having all the extra go to waste.
Because I am watching my weight I attempted to make a egg and vegtable pie sans crust. It works, just spray a little pan in the pie holder and toss your egg whites or whatever in to it!!!

|Small Size and BIG Flavors,
Do you or someone you know love to bake? Maybe you’re always wondering which new cookbooks are worth the money or make a good gift. When it comes to finding new and interesting recipes for baked goods many home cooks search with little real results. For cookbook collectors the expectation of getting a truly new recipe is somewhere between 1:20 and sometimes as little as 1:50. This year, you can turn to “Mini Pies” with confidence; the size and number of recipes prove to have been carefully culled to make it a powerful collection.
The book includes a number of crust recipes ranging from traditional to vegan. Crust is often the trickiest part of putting together a successful pie. Ms. Beaver and Greenseth give you options that work, work well, and are well suited to the mini-dessert craze all around us. You may find that one of these will replace your go-to recipe for pie crust of any size.
You’ll also find unexpected combinations. Based on the test pies, you’ll love the new ideas. Well, we certainly did. I tried seven different recipes–all of them got great reviews. Pear is often underused in pies but “Mini Pies” includes this fruit by contrasting it with interesting combinations such as cranberry or blackberry. Both are less-traditional pairings that improve each fruit in the process. The Ginger Peach was also a winner.
The Pear pies tasted great and I rolled the crust too thin (warning!) so we just ate them from the muffin tin. While I did not make any of the recommended decorative topping pieces, the little, leftover bits of crust would work perfectly. Our family tradition is to butter them, add some cinnamon sugar and eat them hot out of the oven.
One section of this book really stands out: Nut & Savory Pies. Nut pie recipes easily go wrong and end up cloying, overwhelming, or just plain annoying. Anyone who’s treasured that finally-found perfect Pecan Pie Recipe knows this to be true. Savory Pie recipes (beyond quiches) appropriate for a cook’s standard repertoire are rare. Sometimes it seems we haven’t yet come far enough from badly-done steak and kidney pie. The savory pies in this section are so good one of them is already on my next party menu. Although the Savory Sweet Potato pie nearly clenched its place on the menu, The Caramelized Onion, Olive and Thyme Tart will definitely be one of the stars for this gathering of family and guests.

|NOW it’s TOTALLY a 5-star rating!!!!,
The pictures are wonderful, the recipes sound great. The only problem I have is that in some of the recipes, the amounts are confusing – for instance, in the recipe for Susanne’s Lemon Meringue, it calls for 0/0 cup sugar. There are several instances where measurements show up that way. I’m hoping that at some point there will be a correction, either through their website or (even better) a version with corrected measurements.
Once that happens, this will be a killer book, I think! For concept and for a nicely photographed book, I’m giving it 3 stars. For complete directions, I’d bump it to 5.
UPDATE!!! A fix is in the works for the broken fractions on the Kindle version! Based on that info and the authors being so awesome, this HAS to be a 5-star rating!

|Delicious and Easy!,
Having eaten ten or so of the different pies in this little book, I’d recommend them to anyone. The book is laid out exceptionally well with pictures, cute tag lines and easy to follow organization. My favorite recipe would have to be the Bourbon Pecan Pie–which is great a accompaniment to any sort of Fall or Winter dinner.
