Question by : Can I remove non-stick coating from grill?
I am on the market for a panini press/grill and would preferably like to buy one that does NOT have a non-stick coating on the plates. Unfortunately the two that I was looking at (the Breville Smart Grill and the Cuisinart GR-4n) both have non-stick coatings. Is there any way to get rid of the non-stick coating on these and still be able to use them safely?

Wonderful solidly designed and built press that really would have been better with removable plates.,
 Â
 Â
The immediate comparison I made when I received this Panini press was to the Cuisinart GR-3 Griddler Jr, Brushed Stainless Steel, and the key difference between the two products (and the reason I’m giving the better constructed, perhaps even better performing press three stars rather than five) is you can remove the plates in the Cuisinart, and you cannot in the Breville. Convenience and ease of use are central considerations when it comes to just how much you’re going to want to use these ‘extra’ kitchen devices, and if it’s a headache to clean something like burnt/stuck preserves, then you’re going to be less likely to want to pull it out and use it again.
I want to back up a little bit, because I think Breville generally designs and manufactures outstanding high-quality but still affordable products. This press is no exception. Having used both this Breville and the aforementioned Cuisinart, I would give the Breville the edge on almost every single front. It feels more solidly constructed of higher quality materials, it seems to heat more evenly, although the Cuisinart does allow a range of temperature settings as opposed to Breville’s one-temp-fits-all approach. I actually like having one flat and one grilled plate in the Breville, compared to the two grilled plates in the Cuisinart — the flat surface providing a much more even and consistent heat that really radiates into the middle of the sandwich better than the more limited surface contact provided by just grill plates (but you still have the all-important texture and grill marks from the top plate). Both adapt to larger sandwiches. Both sport non-stick surfaces (although the Breville’s is much smoother as the Cuisinart employs a grittier non-stick treatment). Both are perfectly sized for a couple good-sized sandwiches, without all the wasted space that comes with and from the larger models in each line.
I like this press enough that even as I wrap this review up I wonder if I should be giving it 4 stars rather than 3. Standing on its own, it deserves every bit of 4 stars. It’s when it’s held in contrast to a like-priced alternative like the Cuisinart that the Breville loses some of its luster, and then really only due to a question of pure convenience (in the form of removable plates).
If those removable plates aren’t of particular importance to you, I actually recommend this press over the Cuisinart. For me, the convenience of cleaning the removable plates provide is what makes it an easy decision between the two when I want to grill a sandwich.

|I’m im-Pressed: A Breville BSG520XL Panini Duo Nonstick Panini Press Review,
 Â
 Â
 Â
Since 2006 I have owned and regularly use a Breville 800GRXL Die-Cast Indoor Barbeque and Grill for making panini, grilling, and more. Previously I owned and was greatly disappointed by the Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler with removable plates. The removable plates are a nice concept, but not an important feature for me. Knowing the quality of the Breville 800GRXL, I eagerly wanted to try the Breville BSG520XL Panini Duo. Even so, I didn’t think I would want to use both over time.
The Panini Duo is a no fuss non-stick panini press. The top floating hinged ribbed plate and flat bottom plate are coated with non-stick Quantanium(tm) allowing for oil free cooking while resistant to scratching even when using metal utensils. The top plate features adjustable height settings for making open faced sandwiches or desserts.
At first I compared the Panini Duo to my 800GRXL and thought I would miss features such as the drip tray, plate tilt feature, or the ability to lay out flat. However the lack of features and versatility of the Panini Duo, by comparison, are by design. The purposes of these two appliances are not the same.
The simplicity of the Panini Duo is this appliances strongest feature. I can quickly make two paninis by plugging in the outlet, assemble the sandwiches while waiting for the green light, and placing the paninis into the press. Since oil is not required, I made panini without buttering the bread. I prefer the butter flavor; however the bread still came out a toasty brown and crisp. I have toasted buns for burgers by leaving the top open. Additionally I reheated pizza by using the adjustable height feature to heat from above and below. These are all tasks I could accomplish with the larger feature rich Breville 800GRXL, but not with the same ease and efficiency.
While I will use the larger more versatile Breville 800GRXL for cooking breakfast, grilling, and preparing larger meals, the Panini Duo has become my favorite appliance to prepare a quick hot sandwich. The compact size is perfect for making lunch for me and my other half while taking little counter or storage space. If you are looking for a simple panini press for two, the Breville Panini Duo is the perfect choice.
PROS:
Quantanium non-stick surface
Simple to use and care for
Adjustable height feature for melt and open face sandwiches
Oil/butter not needed for healthier cooking
Perfect for a family of two
CONS:
Lacks features found in many panini presses

1. PERFORMANCE
First, I’d like to discuss the performance of the unit. It’s brilliant! I honestly didn’t have high expectations for a hot sandwich press, but I’ve been very happy with it over the past month. Here are some of the items that I’ve made the most and my remarks:
– Sandwich Wraps: Absolutely fantastic results. I can tailor the cooking time for how firm I want the tortillas to be, and the internal ingredients are nice and hot. Having a flat bottom plate and ridged upper plate gives them a perfect combination of toasting and grill marks. The ability to set a minimum height between the top and bottom plates works wonders for veggie wraps because otherwise (at least with mine) the ingredients don’t support the weight of the top plate and the wraps get smashed. The tortillas slide right off the non-stick coating, and any ingredients that spill out during cooking have cleaned up very easily.
– “Grilled” burritos: Again, fantastic. Just like a sandwich wrap but with other ingredients. I’ve started to grill these with the fold facing upwards to help prevent ingredients (such as salsa or guacamole) from leaking out during cooking.
– French Toast: Works pretty well. I have made it three times so far, each time with the lid down but locked in the second highest position (I haven’t tried just cooking one side of the toast by leaving the lid up, yet). If the bread isn’t too wet, then it works very well. If the bread is very moist, though, it doesn’t cook through to the center very well. With the egg, this items does make it a bit more difficult to clean the non-detachable ribbed top plate.
– Pancakes: Works pretty well. The two drawbacks are that the top plate is still being heated even though I’m not using it, and (more important for cooking performance) the temperature of the griddle portion isn’t adjustable. Pancakes do come out pretty well, but not as good as on my other griddle that I use on the stove. Also, for some reason the first batch of pancakes sticks to the griddle a bit. I haven’t run into that on any other food so far.
– Ham: Cooked great, but I’ll never do it again because of the mess. Because of the splatter from the juices, I closed the top lid. The bottom flat plate was pretty easy to clean off, but the ribbed top plate took a while because the nooks and crannies of the ribs make it more difficult.
2. WHAT I REALLY LIKE
– The floating hinge. That is fantastic and makes cooking thick sandwiches and wraps easy.
– The locking height adjustments. This works wonders for less solid foods like toast and veggie wraps.
– The front handle. Might seem silly to mention, but the handle stays cool and opens the press easily.
3. WHAT I WOULD CHANGE
– Add a power button. I would prefer to not have to unplug it to turn it off. When the unit is heating, there is a decent spark that gets generated at the outlet when I unplug it (same thing happens with my George Forman grill)
– Make the heating plates removable, at least the top ribbed plate. These clean up pretty easily, so this is minor, but it can be a bit tedious trying to clean the top plate.
– Add a temperature adjustment. This is pretty minor to me because it typically works great, but for pancakes (which are shown on the box as a breakfast item), an adjustment would be nice.
4. FIT AND FINISH
This is my third Breville appliance, and I was expecting the same level of fit, finish, and attention to detail on this press as I had with the other two (Breville BJE200XL Juice Fountain and Breville BKC700XL Coffeemaker). Upon opening the box, the packaging (at least of my unit) was a bit sloppy with the protective plastic bag around the press not fully covering it. After taking the unit out of the box, I noticed that the fit and finish aren’t as nice as my juicer and coffee maker. For example:
– Some of the bolt holes and rounded corners on the lever arms are sharp as if they weren’t properly deburred.
– The bottom plate has some rough patches on it
– The power cord and cord-wrap on the bottom plate aren’t very well design, IMO (but that’s just personal preference)
I mention all of that for one reason – if you are looking at this press because it is a Breville and you have a certain expectation of quality like I did, then those comments might be important to you. I did not remove any stars for this because the unit is nice – it’s just not as nice as I had expected from this brand (which I think actually speaks highly of the…

|Panini press and more,
Received this as a gift and thought it was great but, probably like many kitchen appliances, would not be used often. I don’t use it everyday, but I use it a lot and not just for sandwiches. I have cooked shrimp, fish, garlic bread, and chicken and have been very pleased with the results. It is an absolutely great way to reheat leftover pizza since it crisps the bottom as well as heating it through. We have had the press for a year and my husband and I both use it once or twice a week. I believe the label ‘panini press’ implies it is more limited than it is. It has variable height and heat, with a sear setting, so it is really quite versatile. I plan to give 2 as Christmas presents this year. Also, it is very easy to clean with a damp cloth, but it might be nice to have removable plates and it should have a power button rather than turning on/off using the plug.

|You get what you pay for — buy the best,
Before buying the Breville, I exhaustively researched the alternatives, and looked at the Breville, the Cuisinart Griddler and some of the Foreman models at stores. I actually purchased the Cuisinart Griddler but returned it, after seeing the Breville. Apologies for the length, but if you are trying to decide among all the models, the following might help you.
(1) Many cooking sites and independent reviewers complain that these type of grills are often too small and too underpowered to really cook food effectively. That is where the Breville is superb, at 1800 watts, and isn’t that what a grill is for — fast, hot, and effective cooking? But high and even heat is an integral part of the Breville design. The biggest difference between the Breville Smart Grill and the Cuisinart Griddler is that the heating elements in the Breville are embedded *inside* the Breville plate itself. The underside of the Breville plates shows the embedded element, and the electrical connection is on the underside, that plugs into the Breville itself. This means the Breville plates heat directly; heat faster; heat more uniformly; and include their smart technology to detect cold meat and immediately turn up the heat. With the Griddler, the heating element is exposed and open and is not part of the plate, and lacks any of this technology. The Breville definitely heats up faster and I measured more consistent heating across the plates as compared with the Griddler. I believe that the Foreman works the same way as the Griddler with regards to those Foreman grills with removable plates, but I can’t definitely verify that. Why would anyone buy those models of Foreman with plates that can’t be removed for cleaning?
(2) This means that the Breville must have two separate sets of plates, one with ridges for grill and a flat one for griddle. So that means you must buy two more plates to get the same advantage as the Griddler since the Griddler plates are reversible. But the Griddler plates lack the built in and embedded heating elements. So you get what you pay for.
(3) The hot heating element of the Griddler is also directly cooking the non-stick surface of whatever side is “reversed” and on the inside of the Griddler. A store that sold both suggested that this might explain why some have had problems with the non-stick surface of the Griddler. (But I suspect that most problems are caused by the caustic soap of dishwashers. I hand wash my Breville plates with the Foreman sponges (see below) and they wash off in a snap — less than one or two minutes of washing.)
(4) Both the Breville and the Griddler have a lid that can be set flat, for doubling the griddle surface. Do any Foreman grills do that? I don’t think so. This is a really useful feature that doubles the usefulness of these appliances.
(5) The Griddler has no tilt for the grease and juice to roll off. So with the Griddler the juice and grease just sits there during cooking. The Breville tilts down like the Foreman grills, and it really works when cooking three or four hamburgers. But the Breville can also be set to be flat when used as a griddle for pancakes or eggs, so the pancake batter doesn’t also roll off! I believe that *only* Breville included this feature — to be set at either an angle, for grease, or perfectly flat, for pancakes.
(6) The Griddler includes a small grease tray that pulls awkwardly out from the side. Breville has a really large tray that pulls straight in and out from the front, and that is far more convenient if you have limited counter space — especially on the side that the tray pulls out on the Griddler. Foreman grills are bigger losers in this regard, with a grease tray that just sits on the front, waiting to be tipped over.
(7) Both the Calphalon and the Breville have a feature whereby the floating lid can be set to ride higher than the bottom plate, so the lid doesn’t mash down the food. The Cuisinart lacks this, and just mashes down the food. But look at both in a store. This feature on the Calphalon is not very sturdy and looks like it would break. The Breville is rock solid when set to hang over the food, and can therefore be set way above the food, for open-faced sandwiches.
I’m not an expert on non-stick surfaces, but the Breville surface appeared thicker and more durable than the Griddler.
(9 Finally, the Breville is larger than the Griddler, and big enough to cook for more than one or two people, but is not that much larger than the Griddler. The Griddler, in my opinion, is too small. The Breville is just the right size for more than one person.
(10) Buy the Foreman sponges when you order the Breville. The grooves in the Breville grill plate match those on the Foreman sponges perfectly.
(11) The Breville doesn’t include a grooved spatula to push through the grease, as does Foreman and…

|Versatile grill and griddle,
 Â
 Â
I’ve been cooking on this grill for about 3 months and it is wonderful! The smart grill has two removable plates, one with ridges (the grill plate) and one that is smooth (a griddle plate). You can make delicious food right out of the box without buying anything else, but I plan to buy another set of plates so that we have two of each kind. The grill will open flat and both sides heat, so you can see the possibilities you would have with two plates of each kind. Functionally, the digital controls on the grill make it very easy to use. It has three basic settings: low, panini, and sear, which take you from 320 to 450 degrees. You can use the dial to set a precise temperature and a cooking time. Since both plates heat, the grill warms up quickly and is ready to cook much faster than a regular oven or outdoor grill. One reviewer mentioned problems with smashing her food. The top plate can be adjusted to not touch, just touch, or even press down on the food. To get the effect you want, read the instructions and play around with the sliding knob on the side of the top plate while the grill is cold, before you are ready to start cooking. I smashed some hamburgers the first time out, but the level of the top plate is not really hard to adjust — you just need to practice for about 5 minutes to see how it works.
Clean up is super easy. The grill has a knob that lets you tilt it a little to catch runoff of juices or grease. The plates’ non-stick surface works great. I’ve burned a little food on them several times while learning to cook and it is no problem to get the mess off. After many uses, our grill still looks almost new. It is such a sturdy, classy looking appliance that we have given it permanent counter space. We have made all kinds of breakfast foods on this grill — bacon and link sausage come out especially well, much better than in a pan because you can cook both sides at the same time and drain the grease away while you are cooking. This means the meats will have nice, crispy brown crust and you will get a little less fat! The grill is also great for seafood. We have made some wonderful salmon fillets and shrimp. Quesadillas are also so easy — and a fun project for older children. And of course, you can make endless varieties of panini. Finally, because the grill can be locked in the closed position and stored upright, it is easy to transport if you like to tailgate. Can you smell the sizzle? Buy this with some silicone tipped tongs.

|problem with non-stick surface bubbling: sooo sad!,
I love this grill. Yes, it’s big, but for a family of four that’s good. Problem? The non-stick surface is beginning to bubble after only 9 months of light use. At first, I thought it was just food left on the grill, but, alas, it is the surface coming away. It might be possible to make the grill last another year or so, if one were careful, but I don’t think this should happen so soon. I don’t think I have used it more than 25 times. I have sent an email to Breville asking for information on returns/repairs. I’ll update this post after they respond (assuming they do).
UPDATE:
I contacted Breville via email, and they promptly replied with information on how to send it back. Assuming they concur with my assessment of the bubbling problem, I should receive a replacement. Can’t ask for better customer service than that! A+

|Manly Grill,
 Â
The 800RXL is a “manly” grill that will be enjoyed by all. However, know that it is large in size and that that is both an advantage and a disadvantage. For a small person, man or woman it might be a handful to lift and store. That being said, it is a wonderful kitchen appliance. It both looks and works great. The tiltable bottom plate is a very nice feature as is the adjustable top plates ability to lock at verious hights so as not to squash more delicate items.
It takes a few minutes to warm up and to cool down, but that is not surpizing given the size of the grill. The timer works well but is mechanical and sounds like an old fashion kitchen timer and it does not stop or start the cooking process. This grill iteself gets hot enough to sear meat nicely and yet folds out flat to grill and griddle at the same time.

|I like it!,
 Â
I am impressed with the Breville quality and inclined to purchase the brand in the future. An extremey well made grill. Easy to clean. Easy to use.
I regret that the plates are not reversible, and that with this grill you are always limited to one side a grill, one side a flat griddle. Good thing it is so large. But if the plates were reversible, this thing would really deliver the goods. As it is, excellent quality, good looks, good performance (fast!), and feels like it will last me years.
Better plan on giving it counter space, this thing is heavy – too much to be lugging in and out of cupboards for as often as you’ll want to us it.

|Great, simple and fast,
I love this grill. It is easy to use, fast, and cleans up beautifully. When not in use, I can stand it on end and it takes up very little counter space. The drip tray is easy to remove and cleans up well. I’ve made a variety of sandwiches, turkey burgers and hamburgers. Haven’t had a chance to grill steak, chicken or fish yet. I purchased this after seeing a friend use it in her restaurant kitchen. She highly recommended it. Said she cooks most of her meats and sandwiches on it. It cuts grilling time nearly in half too. When selecting a spot to use it, consider putting it near your stove vent hood so it can evacuate the smoke/steam.

|The Best,
I have owned and used several brands of home panini grills. This is by far the best one that I have used. It heats up faster, gets hotter, and is more convient to use. The height adjustment for more delicate foods is easy to use and works great. The lock feature for stand up storage works better than any other that I have used. The non-stick surface cleans easily with the included cleaning tool. I can’t think of any thing bad to say about it.

|Terrific Panini grill,
This grill has been not only useful, but fun. Salmon fillets only take TWO minutes and they are perfect. We often look for things we might grill and have turned our imaginations loose on breads, fillings and condiments. Highly recommend this grill!
